What is a Certified Postpartum Doula?
A certified postpartum doula is a caring and experienced person who is professionally trained to assist families as they welcome a new baby into their lives.
A doula understands the challenges which a parent may face following the addition of a new baby, so their priority is to "mother the postpartum family" by offering physical and emotional support in order to make the transitional period as smooth as possible. The doula recognizes the needs of the entire postpartum family (including the partner and any children) and implements them in ways that accommodate each member so that they can feel included, prepared and confident during the postpartum period and beyond.
When a new baby is brought home, most new parents appreciate the support of other experienced parents, however, friends and family members are not always available to help, and even if they are, they may not have the knowledge and experience required to support certain aspects of parenthood (such as breastfeeding or chestfeeding). Certified postpartum doulas are professionally trained in many aspects of caring for newborns and infants -- many are parents themselves. In addition, a part of the doula's role is to keep up to date with current trends in child rearing including: various parenting methods, baby wearing, feeding, safety standards, new and innovative products and much more.
What are the benefits of hiring a Certified Postpartum Doula?
Studies have shown that the quality of emotional care received by a parent during the postpartum period is a vital factor that can strengthen the emotional connection between the parent and child; when a parent’s needs are supported during the postpartum period, they will have the best possible outcome regarding adjustment. In addition, when a parent feels confident, content and prepared, then that helps their family to share those feelings as well. Parents who receive caring support are more successful with adapting to parenthood and developing feelings of security during the postpartum period.
Research shows that those who experience postpartum doula support may have:
* Increased success with breastfeeding and chestfeeding
* Increased self-confidence
* Decreased likelihood of suffering from postpartum depression
* Increased baby-soothing skills
* Better coping skills
* Increased bonding and improved communication with their infant
* Timely referrals to a variety of resources such as relevant professionals and support groups
* Increased feeling of preparedness due to having a greater education on what to expect from a newborn
* Easier overall transition to parenthood
* Greater feelings of support between the parents, which also positively impacts their perception of the postpartum experience
*Other involved family members may also experience increased confidence, increased bonding and improved communication as they also receive education and support during the postpartum period
